5 Simple Ways to Cut the Clutter in Your Home

By Meagan Lord

Have you ever tried to declutter your home and felt completely overwhelmed? Instead of trying to climb a mountain of paperwork, kid’s toys or old DVDs all at once, read these 5 tips on how to begin reorganizing your home and start reducing your stress and anxiety! Minimizing the amount of stuff we have around us and in our homes has a significant impact on our mood levels and productivity.  With the new year upon us, there’s no time like the present to clear out some space and get a fresh start!
  1. Start your clutter-free mission with a checklist. Make a list of all the rooms you want to tackle, then start with the space that bothers you the most. This can be a closet, the garage, your office or even a shelf. Set goals for each room and work in small increments. Even 15 minutes a day can make a big difference!

  2. Create a sorting system. Choose what you want to keep, donate, throw away and store. The easiest way to do this is to label 4 large boxes and sort your space item by item. Remember to ask yourself the following questions when you’re not sure which box to choose:

    1. Does it still work?
    2. Does it add value to your life?
    3. Does it still fit (if clothing)?
    4. When was the last time you used it?

  3. Make use of hidden storage areas. Closets with high ceilings, under the bed storage or even benches, ottomans or trunks can provide lots of storage space. Take note of all the possible storage spaces you already own and see how you can maximize the storage. Organization accessories like drawer separators, flat shoe storage bags and clear plastic bins will help consolidate items and make storing them easier.

  4. Keep like things together. If you have books or toys in every room of the house, it’s hard to take an inventory of what you actually own. Collect all the same type of items and organize them in the space you’re most likely to use them. This will make it a lot easier to find things when you need them, and clear space in multiple rooms in a short amount of time.

  5. Take before and after pictures. Nothing feeds motivation like seeing how far you’ve come. By taking before and after pictures of each room or space you’ve completed, you’ll be able to see the side by side comparison. It will also provide a reminder of how you don’t want your home to look and to keep up with your newfound decluttering skills!
